Caio Terra was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His Jiu-Jitsu journey began at the age of 16 at his mothers behest. Caio was physically smaller than his peers (he weighed 88lbs entering high school) and his mother, worried about his safety, insisted he enroll in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Caio responded like any rebellious teenager and essentially skipped his first year of classes (Terra maintains that he probably did not know a single move until he really started training a year later in 2003). Despite his initial lack of motivation, the situation would change drastically. After receiving his white and blue belts under Ricardo Vieira, Rodrigo Medeiros, and Felipe Costa, Terra started training under Grandmaster Paulo Mauricio Strauch and Grandmaster Reyson Gracie. Unfortunately, Terra could only attend one class per day at the gym, but by this point his motivation was unquestionable and so he built a mat at his house so that he could train four to five times a day. Jiu Jitsu had become a part of his life. Within three years of dedicated training, Caio Terra would receive his black belt under Grandmaster Stauch and Reyson Gracie in 2006. Skeptics questioned how anyone could possibly become a black belt with only three years of training, especially in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where belt promotion is not taken lightly. He would prove to the world that he was not only deserving of the rank but was among the sports elite. Caio Terra is a four-time Rio de Janeiro state champion, a five-time Brazilian National Champion, and thirteen-time World Medalist, the ONLY four time International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Black Belt World No-Gi Champion. Additionally, he was the IBJJF Black Belt World Champion (with gi) in 2008 and finished in second place in 2009.
Scotty Dennis is the instructor at Triad Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has always been intrigued with grappling and wrestled all four years in high school. After watching the first Ultimate Fighting Championship and seeing Royce Gracie defeat opponent after opponent he began training in Japanese Ju-Jitsu and earned the rank of second degree brown belt. He later tried Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and was amazed at how leverage was used to submit opponents. After training a few years and earning the rank of 1-stripe blue belt, he came across the Gracie Combatives program. Being a fan of the Gracie's and having no Gracie Certified Training Center in the state, he began training with a few guys in his town at home. Always having the desire to teach and help people, Scotty was thrilled when the Gracie Academy made it possible for anyone in the world (with the passion and dedication) to become a Gracie Academy Certified Instructor. He trained very diligently earning his blue belt in August 2011 and graduated from the Instructor Certification Program in January 2012. Scotty opened the first Gracie Certified Training Center in the state of North Carolina. Scotty would receive the rank of 2-stripe blue belt from Rener and Ryron Gracie. As his Jiu-Jitsu journey continued Scotty would find Caio Terra and with their shared passion for life and Jiu-Jitsu they would become fast friends. Scotty has been training under Caio's association since August 2014 and has received rank of 4-stripe blue belt. Scotty's sole purpose is to empower kids and adults with Jiu-Jitsu and be a positive role model in the community.
